AGESILAUS
Athenensis, Themistoclis frater, speculator in Xerxis exercitum missus, tametsi pater eius Neocles eum utramque manum per quietem amisisse vidisset. Is itaque inter barbaros, habitu Persicô, constitutus, quendam ex regis stipatoribus, nomine Mardonium interfecit, existimaverat enim, eum esse Xerxem. Cum igitur a circumstantibus caputs et ligatus ad regem deductus esset, eum ad Solis aram immolaturum offendit. In quâ dextram. imponens, cum aliquandiu vim supplicii, ne ullô quidem emissô gemitu tolerâsset, tandem adiecit, Huiusmodi Athenienses fuisse universos. Quod si fidem non haberet, laevam quoque (inquit) iniciam. Ea res autem cum Xerxi pavorem incussisset, servari eum imperavit. Plut. in Paral.
